Who is the BCABC?
The BCABC is a collaborative of asset building practitioners and interested stakeholders committed to working together to advance the asset building approach to individual and community economic development in British Columbia.
History
In 2004 a group of community organizations in BC engaged in asset building organized the "Investing in Self Sufficiency Conference." The conference introduced the approach and tools of individual asset development and sparked debate and discussion on asset building as a poverty alleviation strategy and community development tool.
Following this conference, a core group of asset builders from BC-based community agencies came together to share information and resources, increase awareness of, and promote the outcomes of the asset building approach. This group has since formed the BC ABC and receives generous funding support from Vancity Credit Union.
Goals of the BCABC include:
- Promote and Educate: build awareness of asset building as both an individual and community development strategy and influence its implementation regionally, provincially and nationally
- Program Support: share program resources and develop effective practice guidelines and tools through documenting our knowledge and creating forums for discussion
- Policy Development: contribute to public policy debate and advocate for supportive public policy to remove barriers and provide incentives for asset building for low income Canadians
- Funding Strategy: expand funding opportunities, develop a long term funding strategy to support the sustainability and expansion of asset building in BC
The BC ABC acts as a vehicle through which practitioners can share experiences, information, success stories, and best practices with each other; while at the same time taking a co-operative approach to moving the asset building agenda forward in British Columbia.
